It was the Festival of the tree at Westonbirt Arboretum over the summer on the 25/08/09 so I decided to re-visit after going not to long before in May. To say I was a little disappointed was an understatement, I was hopeful for lots of events and talks on different trees and key aspects on them such as which are best suited to what environment and maintenance tips and techniques. But the only activity to watch was tree carving, and as I arrived early on one of the first days the carvings still looked very similar to trees. I think the Arboretum miss used the word Festival this time but this could have been so much more than just tree carvings which were interesting to watch for a little while. I think the Arboretum has gotten lazy of recent which wasn’t all ways the case as in 2004 I saw an incredible collection of landscape installations. One of which I stumbled across in the book Avant Gardeners written by Tim Richardson. The instillation was by Die LandschaftsArchitekten a German Landscape Architect company, if you are interested in viewing the instillation and their website there address is http://www.dielandschaftsarchitekten.de/ and the link is on the right hand side of the blog in the links tool bar. As for Westonbirt Arboretum I haven’t given up supporting it but I would like to see a lot more happening next time I go.
