Whilst Walking around London exploring new sites I came across this square at Finsbury Avenue which I have been to once before during the day. I have now decided this is my new favourite square in London to walk through at night. During the day it’s a relatively uninteresting square that feels as if it needs to be filled by something but during the night it’s an incredible lighting system that draws the buildings closer together and reflects of from every reflective surface. It’s a really unusual feeling for some reason walking across a brightly lit grid system I guess it’s because I have never been to an area like it before. The square is actually one of the world’s largest exterior lighting projects using color LED lights and it contains 100,000 of them. It has also won awards one of which was the 2004 Winner of Exterior Lighting. The lighting was designed by Maurice Brill Lighting Design Skidmore, Owings and Merrill architects. The site was designed so at night the square wouldn’t become an area people aimlessly walk through but get mixed up in amongst the lights. Unfortunately this wasn’t happening there whilst I was watching but I think it’s amazing to be in.
Have a look at the designer’s websites.
